The Book Series

Dressed all in rainbow...
When starting a book series, most readers naturally reach for Book One. While the typical chronological path works, I want to offer you another approach - the way my daughter experienced the stories as they were written.

Princess Ambrosia

She was only four when I first began to spin the tales of Princess Ambrosia. Stories that were silly, magical, and full of wonder.

That led to the orange book, The Black Ooze, when she had just turned six. That story was written for her age and imagination. As she grew, the books had to grow too.

Two years later, the rainbow books began to take shape - she received Yellow, Green, and Blue. These magical adventures involved hungry snakes, a wicked witch and life-saving magic. But if Princess Ambrosia could handle it, so could my eight-year-old daughter.

The years flew by and before I knew it, she was 10! The final three rainbow books: Red, Indigo, and Violet were revealed.

The sixth book, The Three Sisters was a fun, adventurous tale, which lasted several nights and paved the way for the final two - the origin and actual starting point of the story as well as the epic conclusion.

These final rainbow books marked her journey from young child to pre-teen. As she grew and matured, themes deepened, choices mattered, and the stakes mounted.

Reading in this 'growth maturing readiness order' helped her step into broader, more expansive themes and emotional readiness. Other children can benefit from this growth opportunity as well as they explore darker themes when they too are ready.

Princess Ambrosia

The series wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the Black book, Into the Darkness. In what felt like a spell cast overnight, I had watched my little girl transform into a bright young teenager.

My self-assured, pre-teen daughter had outgrown the earlier, youthful stories. She was ready for the next level.

The Darkness explores themes not suited for younger children. This last book isn't just an imaginative fun, dark fantasy horror novel; but is the culmination of my daughter's growth entering into young adulthood.

The series mirrors my daughter's own journey toward maturity, shifting naturally into more complex and darker themes. Whether you read these books in rainbow order or growth order, I truly hope you enjoy the journey.

About the Author

Neil Cohen

Neil Cohen is a Canadian author, technical professional, and devoted father who never expected to publish a children's book - let alone an entire series. His journey as a storyteller began not in a writing workshop or a publishing house, but during nightly bedtime rituals with his young daughter.

In an effort to make each evening a little more magical, Neil began improvising stories about a fearless Princess named Ambrosia - a heroine who dressed all in rainbow.

Princess Ambrosia Books

With no script and no plan, the tales unfolded spontaneously, stitched together from imagination, laughter, and love. What started as a playful way to bond at bedtime soon evolved into something more. When Neil surprised his daughter with a hardcover version of one of those stories on her sixth birthday, her reaction was unforgettable.

It was then he realized the stories deserved to live beyond her nightly ritual - and perhaps even beyond his own household.

Today, Neil's Princess Ambrosia series blends heartfelt storytelling with adventurous spirit; offering young readers a colourful world of courage and imagination.

As his daughter grew, so did the stories. Maturing in theme and complexity, culminating in a darker, young adult novel that represents both the final book in the series (or is it?) and a rite of passage.

Neil continues to write from his home in Canada, balancing his creative projects with a full-time career in technology. When he's not wrangling code or crafting fantasy worlds, you can find him spending time with his family, revisiting 80s movies, or dreaming up the next bedtime surprise on his long nature walks.

The Bedtime Story

Princess Ambrosia

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away...
That was the signal in our house; the moment my daughter knew it was time to snuggle in her bed. The time for Princess Ambrosia.

It all began when she was around four years old. I introduced her to a beautiful princess dressed all in rainbow. At the time, Ambrosia was nothing more than a figment of my imagination; a character born on the spot, woven together with whatever spark of creativity I could muster before lights out.

These stories were never planned. They were spontaneous, often crazy, and just for her. As the tales continued, a cast of recurring characters emerged; the heroic Frankie the Firefly and the always menacing Evil Wizard. And with each story, the legend of Princess Ambrosia grew.

Over time, these bedtime adventures became more than just stories. They became a tradition. A way to end each day with laughter, wonder, and a little bit of magic.

Fast-forward about a year – I had an idea.
What if I could bring one of these stories to life? What if, instead of hearing about Princess Ambrosia, my daughter could have a physical keepsake?

Drawing

So I wrote. I edited. I designed. And when she ripped open that surprise present on her 6th birthday – her eyes lit up in a way I'll never forget. As an added touch, I added one of her own drawings as a dedication in the book.

And so it began... once upon a time.

The Dark World

An unsavoury beast amongst the darkness

There's a monster under my bed...
My daughter was cunning. She knew perfectly well there was nothing lurking beneath - but any excuse for her daddy to stay and read one more story was a good one.

From the very beginning, she was fascinated by monsters. Even at a young age, fear and mayhem mesmerized her. But as a responsible parent, I kept our rainbow books wrapped in innocence; with just a small hint of 'good vs. evil'.

But kids grow up.

It was hard to admit, but my little girl wasn't so little anymore. Writing colourful books about a Princess and her firefly friend didn't quite land with a soon-to-be teenager.

She was maturing fast: critiquing my writing, poking holes in my plots, and suggesting alternate endings. She was getting smarter. And like any good author, I had to evolve for my audience.

It had been two years since Princess Ambrosia lived "happily ever after." There was always talk in the house about whether more books would come, but I had always brushed it off.

The Evil Wizard surrounded by death and despair

Still, I watched her horror obsession deepen - the darker, the better. And slowly, the idea of a dark Ambrosia book started to take root.

It was time to shed the childlike shell and build upon the world we had created; now with her new fascination: darkness, evil, and fear.

So I crafted a brand new world. One teeming with beasts, curses, and terror. An epic young adult novel built not just for teens...but for my strong, terrifying daughter.

Synopsis
The girl with the rainbow dress discovers an ancient spirit that sets her on a path of peril and destruction. Can her friends help her escape the horrors that await before she is consumed by evil?

Notes from Author
I wrote this for my strong and terrifying daughter on her 13th birthday. The little girl who used to fall asleep to princess stories now binge-watches horror movies before bed.

As she outgrew the rainbow books, I wanted to give her a story that felt like the next chapter. This one dives deep into the fantasy horror genre; perfect for young adults ready to face darkness, demons and destruction...with a touch of magic.

This one's for her – my inspiration then, and still now.
